2 October 1798, Étables-sur-Mer, France – 14 May 1856, Saint Mary-of-the-Woods, Indiana
In 1840, six French sisters walked into a freezing Indiana forest. They had no money and almost no English. Their leader, Mother Théodore Guérin, trusted that Providence would not fail them.
Anne-Thérèse Guérin grew up on the coast of France just after the French Revolution. The Church was still recovering from years of violence. When she was fifteen, bandits murdered her father as he traveled home. Her mother fell into a deep depression, and Anne-Thérèse had to take over the household. She spent years caring for her family and putting her own desire for religious life on hold.
When she finally entered the Sisters of Providence at age twenty-four, she took the name Sister Saint Théodore. She became a beloved teacher and cared for the sick. But a severe illness damaged her stomach, leaving her able to eat only a simple, bland diet for the rest of her life. She accepted this quiet suffering as a way to stay close to Jesus on the cross.
In 1840, the bishop of Vincennes in Indiana asked for sisters to come to America to teach the children of pioneers. Mother Théodore was chosen to lead five other sisters across the ocean. The journey took months of violent storms and exhausting travel by stagecoach and riverboat. When they finally arrived at Saint Mary-of-the-Woods, they found only a dense, freezing forest and a small frontier farmhouse, which they shared with a settler family.
The sisters had no money and spoke very little English. They slept on the floor and often went hungry. Yet Mother Théodore did not despair. She trusted that God had brought them to this wilderness for a reason. Within a year, they opened an academy for young women, welcoming students of all faiths and teaching them that they were deeply loved by God.
The frontier tested them constantly. A terrible fire destroyed their harvest, leaving them facing starvation. Anti-Catholic prejudice was strong, and some locals threatened them. But Mother Théodore's greatest trial came from inside the Church. The local bishop wanted total control over the sisters' money and rules. When Mother Théodore respectfully defended her community, the bishop locked her in a room, released her from her vows and ordered her to leave the diocese.
She bore this crushing injustice with quiet dignity. She refused to speak bitterly about the bishop and urged her sisters to pray for him. Soon after, the bishop's resignation was accepted, she returned to her sisters, and the community flourished. Mother Théodore spent her final years opening schools and orphanages across Indiana. She died surrounded by her sisters, leaving behind a legacy of unshakeable trust in God's providence.

Put yourself gently into the hands of Providence.
Have confidence in the Providence that so far has never failed us. The way is not yet clear. Grope along slowly.
