John 17:20
Bible verse of the day · October 5, 2026
And not for them only do I pray, but for them also who through their word shall believe in me.
What does John 17:20 mean?
Jesus is in Jerusalem with his disciples during the Last Supper, shortly before his arrest and crucifixion. He has just finished praying for the immediate group of followers who have remained faithful to him, asking the Father to protect and sanctify them as they continue his work in the world. In chapter 17, verse 20, Jesus shifts his focus to include all future generations of believers. He acknowledges that these people will come to faith through the witness and teaching of the original disciples, extending his intercession to the entire church.
On the threshold of His Passion, Jesus offers the High Priestly Prayer, enacting the ultimate Day of Atonement. Here, the Incarnate Son bridges the temporal and the eternal, gathering every future generation of the faithful into His sacerdotal offering. He does not view future believers as an abstract collective, but explicitly embeds them into the living communion of the Godhead.
The Principle of Sacramental Mediation
The phrase "through their word" (*dia tou logou autōn*) establishes the foundational Catholic architecture of Apostolic Tradition. Grace is not an unmediated lightning bolt striking isolated individuals; it is communicated through historical, human instruments instituted by Christ.
